Peak Tram Gallery

The Gallery at the Lower Peak Tram Terminus on Garden Road tells the story of this masterpiece of engineering - a mode of everyday transportation and an icon of Hong Kong popular culture.

The first significant exhibit is a dramatic reconstruction of the 1926 machine room using original equipment, augmented with replica sections built using photographs and technical drawings from the period. Visitors then see a partial reconstruction of the original tramcar used when The Peak Tram first opened in 1888.

A series of exhibits continues the story of the tramway construction in the context of Hong Kong’s historical development, and the technical challenges that had to be overcome.

Vignettes illustrate how the system operated, along with the people involved, and provide a look at how the Tram has been viewed in popular culture locally, overseas and on the silver screen.

Finally, on the wall opposite the machine room, there is a selection of postcards from visitors to Hong Kong and the Peak Tram during the last century, adding a very human touch.
